Sophie Mercer azt hiszi magáról, hogy boszorkány, és ezért került be a Hex Hallba, a kiskorú prodigiumok (vagyis boszorkányok, alakváltók és tündérek) javítóintézetébe, de rájön a családi titokra, és arra, hogy Archer Cross, aki iránt gyöngéd érzelmeket táplál, A Szem ügynöke. Azé a csoportosulásé, aminek egyetlen célja, hogy a prodigiumokat eltöröljék a föld színéről. Kiderül az is, hogy Sophie a világon élő két démon egyike – a másik démon az apja. De ami még ennél is rosszabb, hogy olyan varázserő birtokába került, ami életveszéllyel fenyegeti a szeretteit. Ezért úgy dönt, hogy Londonba megy, és aláveti magát a Megfosztásnak, annak a veszélyes rituálénak, ami során vagy a varázserejét veszti el örökre, vagy az életét. De amikor Angliába érkezik, megdöbbentő felfedezést tesz. Kiderül, hogy az új lakótársai is démonok. Valaki démonokat ébreszt, méghozzá azzal a hátsószándékkal, hogy felhasználja az erejüket – és nem biztos, hogy jó célokra. Eközben A Szem Archer Cross segítségével tovább vadászik Sophie-ra, de Sophie már nem érez a fiú iránt semmit. Vagy mégis?
