Merit, Chicago legújabb vámpírja éppen azt tanulja, hogyan kell jól kijönni  a többiekkel. Vagyis a többi természetfelettivel. Összegyűlnek az országban élő alakváltók a szeles Chicagoban, és a Vámpír mester Ethan Sullivan a béke gesztusaként felajánlja vezetőjüknek egyik nagyon különleges testőrét: Merit-et. Merit feladata, hogy megvédje az alfát, Gabriel Keene-t - és kémkedjen, míg a közelükben van. Szerencsére Ethan személyesen készíti fel Merit-et a küldetésére, jónéhány egy-az-egy ellen küzdelemmel.
Meritnek el kell fogadnia a feladatot, még akkor is, ha tudja, hogy valószínűleg megbánja. És nem is téved nagyot. Valaki vadászik Gabriel Keene-re, így Merit hamarosan a tűzvonalba találja magát. Szüksége lesz minden segítségre, amivel a bérgyilkos nyomára akadhat, de bárhová is fordul mindenütt egyre nagyobb a feszültség a természetfelettiek között - nem utolsó sorban ő és az a bizonyos zöld szemű, több évszázados mester vámpír között is.
