A nagy tudású férfi történetei révén érti meg, hogy ha nem sikerül megakadályozni a tündérek és az emberek világát elválasztó falak teljes leomlását, akkor az emberiség jövője reménytelen. Mac fokozatosan tudatára ébred, hogy miféle küldetésre fi gyelmeztette őt Alina abban a bizonyos utolsó üzenetben. Neki kell megtalálnia az ősi Sinsar Dubh-t, a Sötét Könyvet, mert aki először szerzi meg a Tuatha Dé Danaan félelmetes erejű relikviáját, az mindkét világ ura lehet. 

Mac úgy tervezi, hogy a nyomozás után nyomban visszatér az ő kellemesen provinciális, jelentéktelen kis szülővárosába, és igyekszik elfeledkezni mindenről, ami Dublinban történt vele. Hogy végül mégis a maradás és a további kutatás mellett dönt, abban Jericho Barronsé a főszerep. Kettejük közös próbálkozásának sikeréért azonban már a hamarosan megjelenő folytatás olvasása közben izgulhatunk.
